The University of Hong Kong has returned to third place in the latest QS Asia University Rankings as the National University of Singapore continues to reign supreme.
The National University of Singapore has been Asia's best university for four years in a row since 2019, according to the 2022 QS World University Rankings: Asia released on Tuesday, with a perfect score of 100.
Quacquarelli Symonds is a global higher education think-tank based United Kingdom.
Peking University overtook Tsinghua University in second place, with a score of 99.5, its highest ranking so far. It ranked at the seventh last year.
TsinghuaU dropped three spots to fifth this year with a score of 98.3.
Two Hong Kong universities managed to get into the top 10, including HKU which climbed one spot from last year's fourth place with a score of 98.7.
HKU has a perfect score in a number of indicators including academic reputation, proportion of international students, inbound and outbound exchange and international faculty.
Also in third place is Nanyang Technological University in Singapore.
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology ranked ninth with a score of 94.2, down one place from last year.
The Chinese University of Hong Kong climbed two spots to No 11, along with the University of Tokyo.
City University of Hong Kong ranked 20th, falling two places from last year. The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Hong Kong Baptist University ranked 25th and 66th respectively.
"This year's results reiterate the intensely competitive, intensely dynamic nature of Asian higher education. China's best universities continue to progress, Japanese higher education is stagnating -- and Malaysia remains on the rise,” said QS director of research Ben Sowter.
A total of 687 universities in 18 locations across Asia were ranked. They are scored in 11 indicators including academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty or student ratio, international research network, citations per paper and papers per faculty, the proportion of academic staff members qualified to PhD level, as well as proportion of international faculty and international students, and proportion of inbound and outbound exchange students.
A total of 126 universities in mainland China got into in this year's rankings, the most in the region, followed by India with 118 universities, Japan with 108 universities, South Korea, 88, Pakistan, 47, Taiwan 46, Malaysia, 36, Indonesia, 33, Thailand, 23, Philippines, 15, Vietnam, 11, Hong Kong, 9, Sri Lanka, 6, Singapore, 3, Brunei, 2, Macau, 2 and one university in Mongolia.
