HKO reports record-breaking high temperature in May
Hong Kong Observatory reported a record-breaking 36.1 degree celsius at around 2pm today, and announced the Very Hot Weather Warning is now in force.
It is the highest temperature in May recorded since the observatory was established in 1884.
The observatory already recorded 35.8 degree celsius at around 1pm. The temperature continued to rise and reached 36.1 degree celsius within an hour.
According to data, the highest temperature in May was recorded in 1963, seeing 35.5 degree celsius.
The observatory explained that an anticyclone aloft is covering the coast of southern China and the northern part of the South China Sea.
It added that very hot weather will persist in the next couple of days, and there will be a few showers, with more in the latter part of this week.
The observatory also reminded the public to beware of heatstroke and to avoid prolonged exposure under sunlight.
