HK sees hottest day of the year as mercury hits 31 degrees
The mercury crept up to 31 degrees Celsius in Hong Kong on Thursday - the hottest day on record this year, with the mercury soaring further to 33 degrees in parts of the New Territories.
The observatory issued a very hot weather warning on Monday morning, reminding residents to avoid prolonged exposure to the sun and overexertion while outdoors.
Temperatures reached 31 degrees after 5pm, breaking the record for the highest temperature this year, according to the observatory. Meanwhile, Sheng Shui saw a high of 33.1 degrees.
According to the weather watchdog’s forecast, the anticyclone aloft now affecting the coast of Guangdong is expected to weaken gradually in the next couple of days. There will be a few showers over the region, while a trough of low pressure will bring heavy showers and squally thunderstorms to southern China on Sunday and Monday.
Under the influence of a strong easterly airstream, the weather will be slightly cooler and become brighter over the coast of Guangdong early next week.
