HK sees 76,000 visitors in first half of 2022, recovery still below 1pc of 2019
Although Hong Kong saw about 76,000 visitors in the first half of 2022, marking a 125 percent increase compared with last year’s number, the latest number didn’t reach one percent of 35 million visitors logged in 2019.
Hong Kong Tourism Board released the latest figures on visitor arrival in the first six months of this year on Thursday, which increased significantly after the government opened borders to non-residents in May.
There were about 4,000 visitors on average between January and April, and the number rose to nearly 19,000 in May and further jumped to over 41,000 in June.
The arrival numbers added to 76,004 in total in the first half of 2022, showing a year-on-year increase of 125 percent.
“However, compared to pre-pandemic figures in 2019, which recorded 35 million visitors in the first half of the year, the number of visitors recovered in the first half of 2022 is still below one percent of the same period,” according to the board.
About 70 percent of some 41,000 visitors logged in June arrived from overseas and stayed in Hong Kong overnight before heading to mainland cities.
Meanwhile, visitors arriving in Hong Kong in the early months of this year mainly came for family visits and business trips.
The board explained that visitors favor Hong Kong for stopovers mainly because of its convenient transport connections to the mainland, ease of communication, affordable airfares, and the city’s attractive shopping options.
