Hong Kong reported 2,769 new Covid-19 cases on Tuesday as health authorities warned that more non-emergency services will be affected if the pandemic development continues to worsen.
Among the new cases, 2,558 were locally transmitted, including 1,103 confirmed via PCR tests and 1,455 verified positive RAT results.
The Centre for Health Protection also reported 211 imported cases, 135 of which were identified at the airport, including 56 from the UK. The other 57 infections were detected at designated quarantine hotels, and 19 were located in local communities after the patients completed the seven-day isolation.
The Hospital Authority reported a new death -- a double-jabbed 94-year-old woman, pushing the death tally of the fifth wave to 9,207.
The authority also said about 1,000
Covid patients have recently been admitted to public hospitals, causing certain non-emergency services to suspend. Surgeries that are not urgent have been cut as well.
Although manpower and beds have been reserved, the authority warned that more non-emergency services, especially those provided during the daytime, will be suspended if the pandemic development further worsens.
As of Sunday, the authority reported over 33,800 doses of oral
Covid treatment have been administered.
The center was informed of 369 new cases from 285 schools today. Seven schools will suspend certain classes for a week after the students and teachers caught
Covid.
They include three kindergartens -- Learning Habitat Kindergarten in Tai Kok Tsui; Class K3A of Kowloon True Light School (Kindergarten Section) in Kowloon City; and Class K3D of The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Hong Kong Cheung Wah Kindergarten in Fanling,
The four other schools are Class B of Hong Chi Shiu Pong Morninghope School in Tung Chung; Class 5D of Christian Alliance Toi Shan H.C. Chan Primary School in Ma On Shan; Class S31 of Hong Kong Japanese School in Wan Chai; and Class 3D of Lung Kong WFSL Lau Wong Fat Secondary School in Tai Kok Tsui.
Four residents from two elderly homes and two care centers for the disabled were also infected with
Covid.
The city added 30 suspected cases of the BA.2.12.1 Omicron variant and 16 suspected cases of the BA.4 or BA.5 Omicron variants.
Public hospitals and treatment facilities are now housing 982
Covid patients. Among them, 17 are in critical condition, 24 are in serious condition, and five are staying in hospital intensive care units.
