HK records the hottest day in September since 1884

The mercury hit 35.9 degrees Celsius at the Hong Kong Observatory headquarters on Tuesday afternoon, marking the hottest day in September since 1884.
The temperature climbed to around 36 degrees in many districts across the city, as Happy Valley saw the highest figure of 37.3.

Residents in Sheung Shui sweated under 37 degrees, while Sham Shui Po recorded 36.8 degrees, and Tai Lung and Yuen Long Park of New Territories logged 36.5 degrees.

The figure of 35.9 degrees which the Observatory at 1.30pm reported, broke the previous highest record and soared the new history of the hottest day in September since 1884, according to a post by the Observatory on its Facebook page.

The previous high of 35.3 degrees was set just last Monday, toppling a record that had stood since 1963.

Under the influence of a dry continental airstream, the weather will be persistently very hot and dry from today to early next week, the Observatory said, claiming the temperatures can reach 35 degrees in urban areas with weak winds and haze in the next couple of days.
