HK honored to be part of China’s complete victory against poverty

China’s fight against poverty was great and successful, ending the nation's thousands of years of extreme poverty under General Secretary Xi Jinping’s deployment and leadership, said Karson Choi, a member of the national committee of CPPCC and the President of Hong Kong Poverty Alleviation Association.
As early as 2018, Karson Choi set up Hong Kong Poverty Alleviation Association to gather Hong Kong society’s support and actively integrate into the overall development of the country.

The fourth session of the 13th National Committee of the CPPCC, which opened on March 4, pointed out that the poverty eradication work on the mainland has been a core mission with a high degree of concern and commitment for a long period of time.

Choi said he is pleased to see the unprecedented accomplishment of China’s first 100-year goal led by the Central Government, creating a stunning poverty reduction miracle in the history of China.

“That is 10 years earlier to achieve the poverty reduction goals of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development,” he said.

He mentioned that the country will build a moderately prosperous society this year and he will continue to actively participate and contribute in the process of developing a modern socialist country.

Choi also mentioned that when General Secretary Xi Jinping announced the complete success in fighting poverty when he attended the National Poverty Alleviation Summary and Commendation Conference in Beijing, Xi delivered special thanks to the compatriots in Hong Kong who have been supporting the cause of poverty alleviation.

“It is encouraging to note that the work of Hong Kong Poverty Alleviation Association in the Mainland has been recognized by the Central Government,” stressed Choi.

Choi recalled that the association had implemented a series of poverty alleviation work in China through out the years, covering areas including Nanjiang County in Sichuan to Dahua Yao in Guangxi, Litang County in Sichuan, Guangchang County in Jiangxi, Daozhen Autonomous County in Guizhou and Yongsheng County in Lijiang, Yunnan.

“Our work mainly focuses on eliminating poverty by providing education and medical care as well as improving people's livelihood. Over HK$100 million was donated to the cause,” he said.

“After providing the assistance for more than two years, all poverty alleviation sites in the Mainland identified by the association were lifted out of poverty and removed from the official poverty list. We work closely with our country to achieve the goal of poverty alleviation.”
