HK drivers all set for new electronic toll payment system with 660,000 tags distributed, says transport commissioner
Hong Kong drivers are all set for the city’s new electronic toll payment system, with over 660,000 vehicle toll tags already distributed, said Commissioner for Transport Rosanna Law Shuk-pui.
The HKeToll system, which allows drivers to pay without having to stop or queue up, will be implemented in the Tsing Sha Control Area - covering the Eagle's Nest Tunnel, Sha Tin Heights Tunnel and Tai Wai Tunnel - from 5am on May 7.
The new system will replace all manual toll booths and Autotoll lanes, with motorists paying the tolls using toll tags.
Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, Law said as of Tuesday, over 660,000 toll tags have been distributed, accounting for some 82 percent of licensed vehicles in Hong Kong, and among them, over 66 percent had created the accounts needed to use the new e-toll system.
She expected more drivers will submit their applications and activate their e-toll accounts in the coming 10 days.
After the implementation of the HKeToll system, the nine lanes at the Eagle's Nest Tunnel will be reduced to three, as drivers will no longer be required to stop or queue at toll booths for payments, thereby saving time.
Law added that authorities will look into using the extra lanes to optimize the bus interchanges located at tunnel entrances.
