HK delegation stresses protected freedoms of assembly and procession in UN meeting
A delegation of the SAR government attended the meetings of the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women on Friday and said residents’ freedoms of assembly and procession are fully protected.
The delegation was responding to a demonstration being pulled by a women’s rights group earlier.
In the meeting, the delegation stressed that women in Hong Kong enjoy equal rights as men to vote in and stand for various public elections of the governance structure.
Hong Kong residents’ freedoms of assembly and procession are fully protected by the Basic Law and the Hong Kong Bill of Rights. However, like any other jurisdictions, such rights are not absolute or unrestricted, according to the delegation.
One must observe the law when exercising his or her right of peaceful assembly, and police will take appropriate actions to restore public safety and order if there is any illegal or violent act.
The delegation also addressed the committee’s concerns on the Hong Kong National Security Law, and said human rights are respected and protected in safeguarding national security in the SAR.
As for the committee’s concerns on the change of employer of foreign domestic helpers, the delegation said the government fully respects the rights of helpers and they are protected under the Employment Ordinance, same as local workers.
Under the Immigration Department’s policy, helpers can terminate their contract and apply for change of employer, but they should leave Hong Kong and submit a fresh visa application.
