Hesitation and confusion on drivers' faces on first day of HKeToll implementation
Many motorists were confused and not used to the new arrangement of the HKeToll system, leading to many hesitating before entering the tunnel Sunday morning.
The HKeToll system was implemented in the Tsing Sha Control Area at 5 am this morning.
Most motorists were seen driving through the Tsing Sha Control Area, but some hesitated before passing the toll booths and only kept moving once an on-site staff member signalled for them to do so.
The situation also occurred with trucks and taxis that slowed down to make sure they really did not have to pay the tunnel toll manually.
Some lorry drivers entered the lane reserved for the buses, and vice versa, having to be instructed by the staff to enter the correct lanes.
HKeToll allows motorists to drive through the toll plaza without stopping or queuing for payments, as long as their vehicle tags are utilized correctly; if not, they will have to pay the toll within two weeks or incur an overcharge.
The free-flow tolling service will be extended to Shing Mun Tunnels and Lion Rock Tunnel in the next stage and gradually to all government-tolled tunnels this year.
