Grassroots students taken to skies under the "Strive and Rise" mentorship program
Some 170 secondary students from underprivileged families and their mentors enjoyed a 90-minute flight and airline meals via a Cathay Pacific flight on Sunday - as part of the government's Strive and Rise mentorship program.
The program, which aims to eliminate intergenerational poverty in Hong Kong, was launched by authorities to pair children with mentors and offer activities to guide them in their future planning.
And today, in collaboration with Cathay Pacific, the mentees have taken a flight along with their mentors to fly around Hong Kong.
A student mentee, surnamed Au, was excited about his first flight. He stated that he would meet up and hear suggestions from his mentor every one to two weeks regarding his chosen subject.
Au's mentor, Lau, from the banking industry, stated he wanted to support the students from grassroots families by joining the program.
Chief Secretary Eric Chan Kwok-ki, who also attended the event, said the trip allows mentees to experience flying and boost their confidence.
He states that mentees will automatically join the alumni associations after they finish the program, hoping they will help out as mentors in the future.
