Sze Lai-shan, deputy director of the Society of Community Organization, said the SAR government has failed to address grassroots’ needs in the latest Budget, which she described as “unimpressive”.
Sze told reporters on Wednesday that she was disappointed with the latest Budget announced by the city’s finance chief Paul Chan, saying that most of the content were pre-existing measures.
She noted that some of the content were as if they were copied straight from the Policy Address announced by the chief executive in October last year.
Sze also said not much has been outlined by the finance chief on poverty alleviation, while authorities have cut half the consumption vouchers.
She added that social security recipients can only receive an extra allowance equal to half the monthly standard rate of the payments - which is the same arrangement offered last year.
Shortly after the announcement of the budget, Sze said many members of grassroots families have said they felt like they were “forgotten” by authorities.
“The budget for relieving the public’s economic pressure is like a drop in the bucket, while measures on precise poverty alleviation were nowhere to be seen,” she said.
