Neo Democrats' Gary Fan Kwok-wai, one of the 47 defendants in the pro-democracy primary elections case, has resigned as Sai Kung district councilor.
This comes as more defendants quit their positions in political groups this week.
Fan announced in his
Facebook page yesterday that he resigned as Sai Kung councilor on Tuesday, explaining he is currently remanded in Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre and unable to perform his duties.
The Neo Democrats said on its
Facebook page that it understands and respects Fan's decision but will continue to assist in dealing with the aftermath of Fan's resignation.
Fan, 54, wrote a letter Monday dedicated to the Tseung Kwan O residents, in which he said resigning was a "tough" and "painful" decision after serving as Sai Kung district councilor for 21 years.
"I sincerely thank the voters in Wan Hang district for giving me the opportunity in the past to serve and contribute to Hong Kong's back garden, Sai Kung, and Hong Kong's seventh new town, Tseung Kwan O, allowing me to participate in building up Sai Kung and Tseung Kwan O and witness their development and growth," he said in the letter.
He also thanked colleagues and volunteers at his office, as well as party mates for collaborating in community-based work.
The 47 democrats, including Fan, were charged with conspiracy to commit subversion over organizing and participating in a primary election in July.
Fan's fellow Neo Democrat, Tsuen Wan councilor Tam Hoi-pong, also resigned.
"The Neo Democrats fully understand the difficulties and pressures that the current unjust political prosecution has brought to Tam Hoi-pong and his family," the party wrote on
Facebook.
It thanked Tam for his active involvement over the past eight years and his "valuable contributions to developing Neo Democrats services in the western region of the New Territories."
Eleven out of 47 defendants have been granted bail, including Sze Tak-loy, Wong Tai Sin district councilor, and Kalvin Ho kai-ming, Sham Shui Po district councilor. Sze resigned as party chairman and Ho as vice-chairman on Tuesday.
Sham Shui Po district councilors Yeung Yuk and Howard Lee Hon-ting will serve as the party's acting chairman and acting vice-chairman respectively until an election is held.
