Four Immigration Dept offices to extend service hours over HKID renewal scheme
The Immigration Department on Tuesday reminded members of the public that its smart ID replacement centers will only operate until March 3, and those who wish to get the new ID card will have to visit the department’s Registration of Persons Offices from March 6.
The service hours at four of these offices – in Wan Chai, Sham Shui Po, Kwun Tong and Tuen Mun – will be extended to 10pm to cater for demand.
A principal immigration officer, Peggy Yung Pik-har, said as of mid-February, around 7.9 million new smart ID cards have already been issued.
She said the department will allocate as many resources as available to boost its capacity to handle the applications.
Meanwhile, she said authorities currently have no plan to invalidate old identity cards, even though the majority of Hongkongers have already replaced them with new smart IDs.
She added that Hong Kong residents living overseas yet to renew their identity cards will not violate the city’s law if their stay in Hong Kong has not exceeded 30 days.
