A fire broke out at a restaurant in Kwai Chung in the early hours today, in which four cats died from suffocation.
The fire broke out around 5am today at a yakitori restaurant called Kam Woo Siu on Mei Fong Street. Thick smoke came out of the restaurant and drew the attention of the residents who live in the building above.
Police received a number of reports at 4.58am about the fire.
Firemen soon arrived at the scene. The door of the restaurant was locked and there was no one inside. They then broke into the restaurant and put out the fire.
Four cat were found dead inside the restaurant. Their bodies were later handled by the staff of the restaurant. A staffer moved a large cat cage out of the shop, and placed the cat bodies on a table and covered them with a white towel.
Primary investigation suggested that the fire was caused by short circuit of an induction stove.
Officers from the China Light and Power Company also arrived at the site and checked other electrical appliances of the restaurant.
