Former district councilor Ben Lam arrested for cheating election expenses
Yau Tsim Mong district councilor Ben Lam Siu-pan was arrested by Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) for cheating election expenses from the government, according to sources.
Officers from ICAC also searched his office and requested Lam's assistant to provide aid in the investigation.
A spokesperson for ICAC today confirmed that a candidate standing in the 2020 Legislative Council General Election was arrested, suspected of cheating election expenses from by the government.
Officers said they earlier received a case transferred from the Registration and Electoral Office, saying a candidate standing in that election submitted an election return, a document reporting candidates' expenses in the election, filled with false or misleading information.
The act is in violation of article 20 of the Elections (Corrupt and Illegal Conduct) Ordinance, corrupt conduct to lodge false or misleading election return, according to ICAC.
Yet ICAC refused to further comment on the issue, saying the investigation is ongoing.
