Former assistant to lawmaker Starry Lee convicted of election bribery
DAB lawmaker Starry Lee Wai-king’s former assistant, along with a helper from the resident organization of Hoi Lai Estate, were convicted of engaging in corrupt conduct in the 2018 Legislative Council By-election today at the West Kowloon Magistrates' Courts.
The two are currently on remand awaiting sentencing on May 26, pending their background reports.
The two defendants, former lawmaker assistant Wong Wai-ha and helper Deng Yimei were accused of giving out goody bags worth around HK$100 to two voters, getting them to vote for the candidate - DAB’s Vincent Cheng Wing-shun in the 2018 Legislative Council Kowloon West Geographical Constituency By-election.
Meanwhile, the two voters who received the goody bags and charged for election bribery by accepting an advantage as an inducement to vote, were acquitted due to insufficient evidence proving their votes were affected by their action of receiving the goody bags.
Lee, in response to the court ruling, said she has no knowledge regarding the incident and has nothing to do with any election bribery. She also refused to comment on the incident.
She added that she only knew from reports that one of the defendants works for her as an assistant at her legislative councilor office.
