Foreigner taken away over one-man protest outside LegCo complex
A foreigner staged a one-man protest outside the Legislative Council complex on Sunday morning ahead of the visit by top Beijing official Xia Baolong, but he was immediately taken away by police and security guards.
Xia, the director of the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office, arrived at the Legislative Council in the morning to speak to lawmakers as he started the fourth day of his visit to Hong Kong on Sunday.
At around 10.15 am, the foreigner displayed a portable banner that reads “Liberate Queen’s Road Central.” He also had a speaker phone but was immediately taken away by officers in plain clothes and guards.
The man attempted to climb up a lamp post but was also pulled back onto the ground. He was then taken to the nearby Tamar Park.
At the protest area near Lung Wo Road and far away from the LegCo complex, the man was allowed to display the banner again under officers’ close watch.
His banner also reads: “Freedom from cars! Better flow, better business, better environment.”
Separately, a woman who said she wished to hand over a petition letter to Xia was stopped by police at the front door of the LegCo complex.
She was also taken to the protest area near Lung Wo Road.
