Foodpanda couriers start two-day strike over wage cuts
Foodpanda couriers started their two-day strike on Wednesday as they called out to the company to stop cutting their wages and raise their base wages to reasonable levels.
The couriers went on strike hoping to paralyze the food delivery services and the operations of Pandamart in 14 districts throughout the city, including Central, Admiralty, Tsim Sha Tsui, Sham Shui Po, Yuen Long and Sha Tin.
It was understood that over 1,000 couriers went on strike today.
The organizer “A Group of Foodpanda Couriers” said in a statement that the company didn't try to resolve the pay issue with deliverymen after the strike last month, and even lowered the delivery fees.
Couriers blasted that the current wage calculation mechanism is not transparent, under which the fee subject to traveled distances could be axed by up to 80 percent, leaving only a few dollars behind.
One of the couriers said they would escalate their strike by expanding it to other districts and going on strike on weekends and holidays.
Foodpanda said they never reduced the overall service fees, and the minimum service fee remains unchanged since the end of last year.
The service fee subject to distances also increased by 17 percent since the new function of distance calculation by Google was launched, and two-thirds of the order service fee showed growth as well, the company added.
The company continued they received reports that some couriers intentionally stopped others from completing the delivery and refused to work on allocated shifts. Foodpanda called on couriers to respect each other and said they would continue to monitor the situation.
Foodpanda also called on couriers to remain in close contact with the company.
