Five including Nathan Law wanted by ICAC over blank votes incitement
The Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) has issued a warrant on Saturday to arrest five exiled activists, including Nathan Law Kwun-chung, for inciting voters to cast blank or invalid ballots on election day.
Apart from former lawmaker Law, four others, including Sunny Cheung Kwan-yang, who took part in the pro-democracy camp's primary election; and former district councilors Timothy Lee Hin-long, Lee Ka-wai, and Carmen Lau Ka-man are also wanted persons now.
ICAC issued the warrant against the five for breaching the Elections (Corrupt and Illegal Conduct) Ordinance.
The five were each charged with one count of illegal conduct to incite another person not to vote or cast an invalid vote by activity in public during the election period. Cheung faced two more similar charges.
Law allegedly incited voters not to vote at the election when speaking in an online conference on December 3.
On the other hand, Cheung, Timothy Lee, Lee Ka-wai, and Lau allegedly incited pollsters not to vote when discussing in a meeting broadcast on social media on December 16.
Cheung also allegedly published two posts on social media on December 15 to call on the public not to vote.
As all five of them have left Hong Kong, ICAC applied to the magistrate court for an arrest warrant on Friday and Saturday and saw the application approved by the magistrate.
The 2021 Legislative Council election will be staged tomorrow (Sunday).
