Executive Council approves tougher fines for litterbugs: sources
Litterbugs will soon face fines of HK$3,000 - double the current amount - while the fine for shop fronts extending illegally onto pavements will rise to HK$6,000 compared to the current HK$1,500, following approval from the city’s key decision-making body.
Sources said the Executive Council on Tuesday agreed to implement the tougher fines. This follows from Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu’s first policy address in October, which said his administration would conduct a comprehensive review of statutory powers and penalties concerning environmental hygiene.
It is understood that the Environment and Ecology Bureau will introduce the relevant amendment bills to the Legislative Council, with the tougher fines to come into force in the fourth quarter of this year at the earliest.
