Government Announces Plans for Infrastructure and Transportation in the New Territories
The Financial Secretary, Paul Chan, has stated that the government needs to plan ahead for infrastructure and transportation to meet the needs of the growing population in the New Territories.
The population in the New Territories has increased by 3.4 percentage points in the past 20 years and now makes up 54% of the SAR's 7.3 million population.
Only one-fourth of Hong Kong's territory has been developed, and the government is currently exploring more land for housing and expanding development capacity.
The government has initiated the Tung Chung Line Extension project, which is expected to be completed by the end of 2029, and will shorten travel time between Tung Chung East and Central by 21 minutes.
The government also plans to develop a transport network in the Northern Metropolis, including new railway stations in Oyster Bay, Hung Shui Kiu, Kwu Tung, and Tuen Mun South Extension.
These developments will provide additional housing units for 180,000 people and create 40,000 new job opportunities in the Tung Chung New Town.
