Erick Tsang denies low level of voter turnout for LegCo election
Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs Erick Tsang Kwok-wai on Wednesday denied that the 30 percent voter turnout of last year's Legislative Council election was a low level.
Tsang's statement came after Tik Chi-yuen from Third Side challenged why the voter turnout for the 20 seats in geographical constituency – elected directly by citizens – stood at only 30.2 percent.
Tik also voiced concerns over how the government never looked into the reason behind the drastic decline in voter turnout in last year's election.
Priscilla Leung Mei-fun from the Business and Professionals Alliance for Hong Kong said some people had been inciting others to cast blank or invalid ballots, as she pointed out the increased numbers of blank and invalid ballots for seats in the functional constituency.
Tsang then replied that the voter turnout in some democratic countries also stands at 20 to 30 percent, and defended the city's 30.2 percent voter turnout as being not at a particularly low level.
Tsang also cited figures and said so far there were 14 complaints related to the election. As of March, six cases were closed and 12 were arrested. Authorities also pressed charges against three and two of them were convicted, Tsang noted.
He continued that the so-called “high level of voter turnout” was recorded when the city was at its most divisive when it was torn apart by the “black terror," implying the social unrest in 2019.
He added the voter turnout for seats in the election committee constituency was close to 100 percent, and stressed that the electoral reform and the implementation of “patriots ruling Hong Kong” are what benefit the city the most in the long run.
