Eleven persons jailed for up to a year for corruption in 2016 Legco election
Eleven persons were jailed for up to a year on Friday for corruption at an election for the information technology constituency of the 2016 Legislative Council election.
A total of 14 persons were charged with conspiracy to defraud, conspiracy to engage in corrupt conduct at election by offering advantage to others and engaging in corrupt conduct at election by accepting advantage.
Among the defendants, five were members of the Taxi Drivers & Operators Association, who offered advantage to nine friends and family members to register and become voters at the election.
Li Wai-man, then corporate affairs director of the association was sentenced to one-year imprisonment for conspiracy to defraud and conspiracy to offer advantage to others at election.
Yeung Yiu-hung, then vice secretary of the association and Poon Sau-fong, then clerk of the association both pleaded guilty to conspiracy to defraud. Yeung and Poon were jailed for eight months and seven months respectively.
Lui Ah-fook, then executive committee member of the association was jailed for seven months for conspiracy to offer advantage to others at election. He was also jailed for two months for accepting advantage at election. He will serve all the jail terms concurrently.
Lui Ah-fook's sister Lui Wai-fong and son Lui King-yin pleaded guilty to accepting advantage at election. The former was jailed for three months and 12 days, while the latter three months.
Five other defendants in the case were sent behind bars for between six weeks and three months for accepting advantage at election.
Li, Lui Ah-fook, Lui Wai-fong and Lui King-yin were charged with conspiracy to engage in corrupt conduct by offering advantage to others between April 14 and September 4, 2019, for they offered HK$1,000 to 36 persons each as incentive for voting a specific election candidate.
