Elderly man knifed to death while out for exercise
Anti-triad police are hunting for a non-Chinese man in connection with the brutal attack of a 70-year-old man shortly after he left his home in Yuen Long for early morning exercise yesterday.
It is understood that the victim, Chan Kwong-kuen, was a retired meat stall worker and had lived in the nearby Lee King building for more than 40 years.
Chan was attacked at around 3.43am outside a HSBC branch on Hong Lok Road near the junction with Castle Peak Road, which was about 80 meters away from where he lived.
The wanted suspect attacked the elderly man with a knife inflicting multiple cuts.
Chan was sent to Pok Oi Hospital but was later certified dead.
The police blocked the road to search for evidence, including nearby surveillance camera footage.
There was a slipper, a mobile phone and a pair of glasses at the murder scene believed to be Chan's. Officers found Chan's wallet inside his apartment.
Sources said Chan lived alone in a flat on the fourth floor of Lee King Building, while his wife and children have moved overseas.
It is understood that usually Chan went out for exercise at 3am and returned at around 5am, and had breakfast at nearby restaurants every morning.
Chairman of the Lee King Building Owners' Corporation, Shing, said Chan was friendly and served as a corporation member six years ago.
"Chan was not a person who likes to provoke fights. He was just an ordinary old man," Shing said.
Shing said some South Asian people frequented the neighborhood and always made noises at night.
He urged law enforcers to step up patrolling.
Meanwhile, in a separate case, a 22-year-old man was hospitalized after being slashed by a gang wielding knives in the early hours of yesterday in North Point.
The man, Yiu, was walking along King's Road with a friend around 1am when three or four men attacked them.
Yiu and the friend fled the scene, but he was stabbed in the abdomen and left leg.
He hailed a taxi to Gleneagles Hospital in Wong Chuk Hang, where hospital staff called the police.
Yiu was later transferred to Queen Mary Hospital for serious injuries.
The wounding case is being investigated by the police eastern district anti-triad unit.
Sources said Yiu and his friend visited a spa parlor in North Point before the attack.
