Drunk driver arrested after jumping off bridge in flee bid over two-vehicle collision
A drunk driver was arrested for causing a two-car collision and fleeing the scene by jumping off a bridge in Kowloon City early Friday morning.
The incident happened around 4 am today as a minivan heading toward Kwun Tong on Prince Edward Road West was said to have lost control approaching Hau Wong Road and drove into a DHL minivan in the opposite lane.
The out-of-control minivan continued traveling for another 10 meters before coming to a stop, crashing into the bridge's railing.
The 57-year-old driver of the DHL minivan, Chan, was uninjured and went to check on the other driver's condition only to discover an empty driver’s seat. He later spotted a man lying on the road five meters beneath the bridge.
Police responded to the scene and suspected that the 27-year-old driver slipped off the bridge when climbing out of the vehicle. Officers arranged for him to take an alcohol test and recorded a blood alcohol level that exceeded the limit.
The 27-year-old driver, surnamed Wan, was later arrested for reckless driving, drunk driving, and failing to stop after an accident and is currently remanded in police custody.
