Domestic stability prerequisite for economic boost, says John Lee
Hong Kong's incoming leader John Lee Ka-chiu said on Monday that domestic stability is a prerequisite for economic prosperity, also key to the steadfast and successful implementation of “one country, two systems”.
Writing in Wen Hui Pao, the Chief Executive-elect emphasized that there is no prosperity without national security.
Lee said his 35 years of service in the police force had taught him four critical elements of effective governance, including having a fighting spirit to swim upstream, being results-oriented, developing team spirit, and staying alert to managing risks.
He noted that Hong Kong had seen a series of actions in the past resisting the “one country” principle, including the protests against national education, the Occupy Central movement, the Mong Kok riot, and the anti-extradition movement.
The social unrest, together with the provocation of external forces, was breaking the city apart, Lee wrote, adding that the implementation of the city’s national security law and the improved electoral system had brought stability to the territory and got back on the right track of "one country, two systems".
The incoming Hong Kong leader also said the city will be moving towards governance and prosperity under a new electoral system being fully implemented in the next five years, with the SAR government reaching new heights together with its citizens.
