The medical programmes of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Wuhan University are among the latest batch of 25 medical qualifications recognized by Hong Kong, as the list will be gazetted on Friday (Dec 30) and tabled to Legislative Council for negative vetting on January 11.
This follows the previous two batches of 50 recognized medical qualifications, including China's Fudan University.
It is also the first time two schools in India and New Zealand made the list, including the 4.5-year medical programme of JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research and the six-year medical programme of University of Auckland.
Among the 25 recognized medical qualifications, 15 are from the U.S., five from the U.K., and one is the five-year medical programme jointly offered by the U.K. and Singapore.
The LegCo passed a bill last year to allow non-local doctors graduating from certain schools to register exam-free after having worked in the SAR for five years.
“The list of the third batch of recognized medical qualifications will be gazetted on December 30 (Fri) and take effect the same day. It will be submitted to the LegCo for negative vetting on January 11, 2023,” a government statement read.
“The Special Registration Committee (SRC) has so far recommended a total of 75 medical qualifications for recognition.”
Secretary for Health Lo Chung-mau said: “I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to the SRC Chairperson Grace Tang, and all of the members for sparing no effort in conducting assessment of non-local medical programmes in the past few months.
“The SRC will continue to discharge its statutory duties and take forward the task of determining the full list of recognized medical qualifications.”
