Disney+ makes splashy HK debut

Walt Disney's subscription streaming service Disney+ made its debut in Hong Kong yesterday, charging HK$73 per month for unlimited access to over 1,200 movies and 16,000 television series, including Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings.
The movies and series will be streamed on six channels under Disney+, including Disney, Pixar, Marvel Studios, Star Wars, National Geographic and Star.

Users can subscribe to the yearly plan at HK$738. Subscriptions can be bought via the Disney+ mobile app or DisneyPlus.com website.

Each subscription supports a maximum of seven users and downloads to 10 devices.

Subscribers get to enjoy movies and television series with 4K resolution and voice-over as well as subtitles in 28 languages - including Cantonese and Putonghua.

Viewers will be able to watch Disney+ original productions, including Christmas comedy Home Sweet Home Alone, animated series Olaf Presents and documentary series The World According to Jeff Goldblum.

Diehard Marvel fans must not miss superhero miniseries Hawkeye. National Geographic's adventure series Welcome to Earth and Star Wars science fiction series The Book of Boba Fett are also worth watching.

Fans of South Korean cinema will be able to watch variety show Running Man, black comedy series Snowdrop and the documentary film BLACKPINK: The Movie.

Meanwhile, applications for this year's Disney Imaginations competition will run until November 26.

The competition aims to encourage tertiary students to propose concepts for Hong Kong Disneyland.

This year, it will see students from 20 disciplines across 17 tertiary institutions join in teams.

The winning team will receive awards including a short-term job opportunity at Hong Kong Disneyland Resort for being able to participate in the theme park's design projects.

Walt Disney Imagineering Creative Designer Isabel Caruncho, who won the competition in 2013, said students' responses to the competition were more enthusiastic this year. The challenge is a "brain twister for students, they want to figure out how to create the experience."

Caruncho, who earned a bachelor of fine arts in interior design from The Savannah College of Art and Design in 2016, thought winning the competition was reward for her previous efforts in arts.

"When I came to Disney, it was everything that I ever studied or learned about in the past, kind of all packaged into one place," she said.
