'Deputies should tout Hong Kong system to world' - China’s Wang Huning says when meeting HK CPPCC members
China’s number four official told Hong Kong’s members of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) on Wednesday morning that they should show the world the strength of Hong Kong’s "one country, two systems" political system.
Wang Huning, a member of the state’s top decision-making body Politburo Standing Committee and who was expected to be the next chairman of CPPCC, met with deputies from Hong Kong and Macau on the fifth day of the state’s top annual parliamentary meetings "Two sessions" in Beijing.
During the meeting, Wang, for the first time, asked Hong Kong and Macau’s CPPCC members to play the role of "thought guides" to "tell China’s story well" and "let the whole world know the superiority of 'one country, two systems.'"
He highlighted that the members are responsible for promoting the benefits of their political systems and targeting the youth in Hong Kong and Macau, as well as presenting the good aspects of China’s development to the world if external forces attempt to undermine "one country, two systems."
Wang added that Hong Kong and Macau’s CPPCC members must uphold the Constitution and the Basic Law and ensure national security.
Besides, the members should help develop the economy after the society achieved governance from chaos, Wang noted, encouraging more integration into the Great Bay Area from the two special administrative regions.
He said that China's leader Xi Jinping is concerned about the livelihood of Hong Kong and Macau people, and he also asked the delegates to study the theory and spirit of the 20th National Congress.
Director of the State Council's Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office and Vice Chairman of CPPCC Xia Baolong, former Hong Kong chief executive Leung Chun-ying and his Macau counterpart Edmund Ho Hau-wah sat in the meeting.
