Daily testing arrangement for students to be reviewed in May
Authorities will review in mid May the requirement for students to undergo Covid rapid tests daily, Secretary for Education Kevin Yeung Yun-hung said on Sunday.
In a TV program, Yeung said just a few number of primary schools can resume face-to-face classes on Tuesday. Most of them will gradually resume in-person classes from April 25, starting from senior classes.
As the vaccination rate for children aged 3 to 11 is low, Yeung refused to let primary schools and kindergartens resume full-day face-to-face teaching at this stage. The preliminary idea is to allow them to resume full-day in-person classes when the vaccination rate reaches 90 percent, but the exact arrangement will be decided later.
Education Bureau will also review the arrangement of requiring students to perform daily rapid tests in mid or late May, following comments from parents that it would be a nuisance.
In response to demands for the government to distribute rapid tests to all students ahead of school resumption, Yeung said government should ensure the proper use of public funds.
Yeung added that from previous experience, the probability for students to “fake” will be very low. Schools can also ask students who suffer from fever or other symptoms to redo the rapid test at schools.
