Cyclist dies after crashing into taxi in Yuen Long
A 75-year-old cyclist died on Thursday morning after he crashed head-on into a taxi in Yuen Long, landed on the taxi's roof and rebounded onto the ground.
The fatal incident occurred at 10.39am this morning between Fung Chi Road and Wang Tat Road in Yuen Long, suspectedly because the cyclist didn't follow the the instructions of the traffic lights.
The cyclist surnamed Chan then crashed into the taxi traveling along Wang Tat Road towards Au Tau as the 57-year-old driver surnamed Yik couldn't apply the brakes in time. The taxi ran for about another 20 meters before it came to a halt.
Chan first landed on the roof of the taxi following the collision and rebounded back onto the ground. The front end of the taxi became indented and the right-hand side of the windscreen cracked. The right rear wheel also mounted the bicycle.
Chan was severely injured and fell unconscious. Paramedics rushed him to Pok Oi Hospital but in vain.
Yik stayed at the scene to aid police investigations. He was later arrested for dangerous driving causing death and taken to a police station.
