A mountain biker was confirmed dead on Wednesday on the city’s highest peak Tai Mo Shan after suddenly fainting during the ride.
The 53-year-old man, surnamed Wan, was traveling on a mountain bike trail from Route Twisk at around 11am when he passed by Ho Pui Reservoir. According to the deceased's companions, he stopped the ride because he felt discomfort in his chest before suddenly falling unconscious.
His fellow riders immediately surrounded him and gave him first aid, including chest compressions and artificial respiration, before rescuers deployed a helicopter to lift the man’s body and sent him to Ruttonjee Hospital, where he was certified dead in the afternoon.
"[The deceased] said he was feeling uncomfortable around 15 minutes after our ride started," said Leung, a fellow cyclist of the deceased.
The involved mountain bike trail has one of the most elevation gains of all mountains in Hong Kong, with narrow lanes and multiple turns.
"It is only for cycling masters," said a rider surnamed Yeung.
