Customs seizes suspected ketamine worth about HK$35m
Customs seized about 60 kilograms of suspected ketamine valued at HK$35 million in a shipment at Hong Kong International Airport.
Customs announced on Thursday that officers on December 7 inspected an air cargo consignment declared as carrying camera kits and arriving in Hong Kong from Spain.
Officers found there were 119 network video recorders inside the consignment, 60 of which had been emptied to conceal suspected ketamine with a total weight of about 60kg.
The ketamine was expected to be supplied to the local entertainment facilities during New Year and Christmas, Customs added.
The Customs Drug Investigation Bureau Airport Investigation Group will investigate the case. Senior investigator Yau Kin-wai states that the shipment was originally set to be sent to an industrial building in Tsuen Wan, which was revealed to be a frozen foods import company.
A man later called the logistics company to request a change of the receiving address but cut off all contact after not appearing to pick up the shipment.
The Customs suspect that this man illegally utilized the address of a legal company to get the shipment to lower the suspicions.
Customs believes the local demand for drugs will be increased as Christmas and New Year holidays approach, and therefore they would further step up enforcement action to combat drug trafficking activities before the long holidays.
