Customs seizes HK$2m worth of dried abalone in anti-smuggling operation
A batch of dried abalone worth nearly HK$2 million has been seized by Hong Kong customs officers from a Shenzhen-bound truck at the Lok Ma Chau Control Point during an anti-smuggling operation on Monday.
The Customs and Excise Department said in a statement today that its officers intercepted the outbound goods vehicle declared as carrying soft drinks, cookies and dried sea cucumber during the operation.
The batch of suspected smuggled dried abalone weighing about 39 kilograms was seized after inspection, while a 50-year-old male driver suspected to be connected with the case is assisting the investigation, the statement wrote.
A Customs spokesman reminded members of the public that in Hong Kong, under the Import and Export Ordinance, the maximum punishment for smuggling unmanifested cargo is seven years in jail and a HK$2 million fine.
The spokesman added that the department will continue to combat cross-boundary smuggling activities with firm enforcement action based on risk assessment and intelligence analysis.
