Customs makes biggest land smuggling bust since 2018 with HK$30m electronic products seized
Customs cracked the city's largest overland smuggling case since 2018, seizing around 510,000 electronic products worth HK$30 million and arresting a 61-year-old man in Man Kam To Control Point.
Officers announced on Wednesday that the smuggling was busted during an Immigration Department's departure clearance at the control point on Monday on a goods truck which carried 30 wooden containers.
The cargo on the truck was declared to be a batch of electronic screens imported to the mainland.
However, officers launched X-ray inspections and found about 510,000 electronic products and parts, including smartphones, laptops, computer central processing units and hard disks that were concealed behind a batch of declared goods inside the container.
"It is the biggest smuggling case by overland transportation from 2018," said Senior Inspector Wong Chi-man of Customs' Cargo & Vehicle Processing Unit. It was believed that the electronic products were conveyed to the mainland for reselling or reassembly.
The 61-year-old truck driver was arrested, and he has been released on bail pending further investigation.
