The legal requirement for an employee to get inoculated against Covid-19 under the Employment Ordinance will be officially repealed on June 16, according to a government statement issued on Wednesday.
This came as the Labour Department announced today (Wed) that the Employment (Amendment) Ordinance 2022 (Commencement) Notice will be published in the Gazette on Friday (Apr 14) and will take effect on June 16.
“Starting from June 16, there will be no vaccination provisions under the Ordinance, and any legitimate vaccination request made under the Ordinance prior to the aforesaid date shall cease to have effect on or after that date,” a spokesman for the Labour Department said.
The Employment (Amendment) Ordinance 2022 took effect on June 17 last year, which stated that it wouldn’t be consider as an unreasonable dismissal for a boss to fire an employee who refused to fulfill the
Covid-19
vaccine requirement.
“The government will repeal the vaccination provisions under the Ordinance on June 16 after Legislative Council’s full negative vetting period has run its course,” it read.
The government also backed its decision as it pointed to the removal of the statutory
Vaccine Pass requirement earlier and Hong Kong society resuming normalcy in full.
It said the Health Bureau and the Department of Health have been consulted on the matter as well.
