Government pandemic adviser Yuen Kwok-yung said coronavirus will become as common as flu and everybody will be infected someday.
For those who get vaccinated, their bodies can still produce immune responses even if the
coronavirus is mutated in future, said Yuen.
He said the
Covid-19 situation in Hong Kong is improving due to the rising vaccination rate and urges more people to get vaccinated.
On a TV program, Yuen said he hopes the vaccination rate could reach 99 percent to achieve herd immunity as there are still outbreaks in the United States, United Kingdom and Israel whose vaccination rate reaches 70 percent.
Recently, some overseas Hongkongers returned to Hong Kong to receive the
BioNTech and Sinovac
vaccines, but they still got infected.
Yuen said these people usually do not have any symptoms or only have extremely mild symptoms.
He said the vaccinated can still spread the virus if they are infected, but their symptoms will be extremely mild and they definitely will not die or become severely ill.
More Hongkongers should get vaccinated so that our society can go back to normal, Yuen stressed.
He said the elderly may need a booster
vaccine every one or two years as their bodies are poorer in producing antibodies and immune responses, while the young people might not have such need.
