Couple arrested in Pat Heung over death of 14-month-old baby
A couple was on Friday arrested for murder over the death of their 14-month-old baby girl in Shui Tau Tsuen in Pat Heung, who police believed died one to three days ago with suspicious bruises on her cheek, neck and chest.
Gary Lam Hing-cheung, assistant Yuen Long district commander for crime said police received a report at 9.30pm on Friday night from a 64-year-old man surnamed Chan, who told officers that he couldn't reach his daughter all day and headed to a village house in Shui Tau Tsuen but no one answered the door.
Cops and firefighters then broke into the village house and found Chan's 32-year-old daughter and his 33-year-old son-in-law surnamed Lam in one of the rooms. The couple was emotionally unstable and they kept sidestepping questions regarding the baby girl, who was found lying unconscious on the floor in another room.
The baby's body was completely covered a towel and a bag of diapers. She also sustained injuries to her neck and was certified dead at the scene.
Police during investigation identified multiple bruise marks in half-moon shape on the baby and suspected the marks were caused by finger nails. The baby's right cheek, skull and upper body became pale and swollen, with livor mortis on the back.
Officers believed the baby died one to three days ago after preliminary examination. The actual cause of death has yet to be ruled by the forensic as the body was sent to a morgue around 4am on Saturday.
Gary Lam continued that the two, both jobless, have been married for seven years. The father has a record of metal illness but it remains unclear if the injuries were done by the mother or the father.
He pointed out that the case involved severe violence and child abuse and officers are still looking into the arrestees' motives, physical and metal condition. The couple was remanded in custody.
Some neighbors said the couple moved in about 10 months ago and they rarely took the girl out, adding there was never any baby's crying at all.
Others claimed that the couple was performing a ritual on the baby girl who was “possessed.”
