Construction boss stages rooftop protest, workers join in over unpaid wages
Five construction workers were spotted sitting atop a scaffolding outside a Tin Hau building on Friday afternoon as they wished to recover some HK$2 million in unpaid salaries overdue since last October.
The workers also hung a banner that says “despicable developer” from the scaffolding of the first-floor canopy of Viking Garden on Hing Fat Street.
The subcontractor was also spotted sitting at the edge of the building’s rooftop.
The report was filed around 1.30 pm, and police and firefighters soon arrived at the scene to set up air mattresses. Police also cordoned off the area and sent a negotiator to try and calm the subcontractor and the workers down.
A female construction worker later arrived on the scene to find out what was happening.
She said the scaffolding work started last October, but workers hadn't been paid for three months straight.
“The boss [subcontractor] told me I would get my salary today. Yet, as it turned out, even he didn’t get paid today,” she said.
“I’m really worried that he would jump off the building!” she added, saying that her boss is trustworthy and has never owed workers their salaries.
It is revealed that the subcontractor is named Lam. Live sources pointed out that Lam said he could not settle workers’ salaries entirely, even if he applied for loans.
After about an hour of negotiation, the six finally came down from the rooftop and scaffolding to a safer place at around 2 pm.
