ChatGPT a good thing for Hong Kong’s academia, says lawmaker
Election committee lawmaker William Wong Kam-fai said the trending ChatGPT chatbot is a good thing for academia as it can lead educators to come up with new teaching methods to adapt to cutting-edge technology.
The full name of the program is Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer. It is developed by the artificial intelligence company OpenAI and can write articles and respond to questions the way a human does.
Wong, also the Associate Dean (External Affairs) of Chinese University's Faculty of Engineering, said teachers can use ChatGPT to prepare classes, and edit and filter the content generated by the program with their own professional knowledge and concepts.
He added if teachers can guide students on filtering the computer-generated content and even finding mistakes in artificial intelligence, it can inspire students' thinking and benefit future technological developments.
Wong urged the education sector not to treat the ChatGPT only as a means for plagiarism and ghostwriting as well.
Yet, Wong reminded the education sector not to become too dependent on technology, despite the need to embrace new technology.
Wong will travel to Beijing on Thursday for the upcoming Two Sessions – annual meetings held China's two top administrative bodies, the National People's Congress and the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.
Wong said he will table five proposals to strengthen the cooperation between Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area, including the innovation-technological cooperation in the Lok Ma Chau loop area.
