A male buffalo which charged at a group of students during a pursuit on Thursday and injured ten eight-year-old kids had been captured for sterilization.
The incident took place at a car park near Pui O on Lantau on Thursday morning. The two buffaloes are father and son, according to a woman in the community who had been taking care of stray buffaloes and cows.
The father “Loner” and the son “Big Eyes” were fighting and chasing each other over territory at that time.
After the incident staffers from Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department were mobilized to the scene. They later learned that one of the buffaloes was not sterilized and started searching for that buffalo in Pui O.
The department said staffers had successfully located and captured that buffalo on Friday. It was understood that the captured buffalo is “Big Eyes”. It had been taken to Ta Kwu Ling Operation Centre and a sterilization surgery will be performed later.
It is expected that “Big Eyes” will be less offensive towards other male buffaloes after the surgery.
Some animal carers estimated “Big Eyes” will have to rest and stay under observation at the center for up to three months before being released back to nature.
