Hong Kong's Drainage Services Department Tackles Flooding with Improvement Projects
The Drainage Services Department (DSD) in Hong Kong is working to address four flooding blackspots in the city.
The Pok Fu Lam Village and Chatham Road South areas are currently undergoing improvement work, while the Lam Tsuen Valley Basin and Shek Wu Wai, Yuen Long have completed the first stage of improvement and are now in the planning phase for the next stages of construction.
The DSD uses various measures, including interception, storage and upgrading pipes, to tackle flooding problems in different areas.
The department has also introduced remote-controlled desilting robots and a team of unmanned aircraft to monitor river channels.
The DSD is also promoting a water-friendly culture by considering the integration between environmental conservation, construction and community.
The department has beautified and altered the interchange of Shan Pui River and Kam Tin River, along with Yuen Long Bypass Floodway into a public area in Nam Sang Wai, Yuen Long.
