TV stations flex their muscle in music awards competition
Radio Television Hong Kong and Television Broadcasts will organize a music awards ceremony together for the first time, sources said.
It is understood that the public broadcaster and TVB wants to join hands to fend off competition from ViuTV, which will organize its music awards in April.
In previous years, the four major media outlets in Hong Kong – RTHK, TVB, Commercial Radio, and Metro Radio – held their own separate music award show. TVB's rival, ViuTV, joined the club this year and held its first music awards ceremony.
Sources said RTHK and TVB will announce details of their cooperation in a press conference next Wednesday (Jan 5).
Netizens are speculating if ViuTV's popular boy band Mirror will appear on TVB for the first time if they win at the TVB-RTHK awards.
On Saturday, ViuTV broadcast the finale of Kingmaker IV, in which three winners were selected through a combination of public votes and ratings by a panel of five judges. They were Marf Yau, Gao Shum, and Day Hui, who will be joining a girl group to be created by the station next month.
