Like every other ordinary Hongkonger, US Consul General Gregory May “indulged” himself with the city's unique “2-Dish Rice” and shared his joy with the internet on experiencing citizens' must-try.
The “2-Dish Rice” is a meal box including rice and two small portions of Hong Kong-style side dishes. It has become increasingly popular among students and workers in recent years due to its low prices.
“Many of you suggested I try a "2-Dish Rice." I finally got out of the office with lots of Hongkongers for a quick lunch - so tasty and affordable,” May said in the
Facebook post Tuesday.
“What are your must-order items?” he asked netizens. He also added the hashtag “ThisThisRice,” as a reference to how citizens make their orders by mostly pointing their fingers at the side dishes and saying this or that to the servers.
Many praised May for being down to earth and were curious to know which two side dishes he chose. The answer – Chinese-style fried kale with preserved meat and braised chicken with potatoes – was later revealed in the comment section.
“Hong Kong's Rice with Two Sides not only attracts interviews and reports from world-famous media but is also favored by foreign envoys. It is a great contribution to promoting exchanges between Hong Kong and friendly countries around the world!” the Hong Kong Concern Group of Rice with Two Sides also commented.
