Cases expected to hit four-digit mark by end of month

Covid-19 cases may return to four-digit levels by the end of June due to residual transmissions from the city’s fifth Covid-19 wave, according to the director of the University of Hong Kong's Centre for Infection Ho Pak-leung.
Residual transmissions have led to a resurgence in cases with 814 confirmed cases logged on Sunday, 16 of which involved a highly infectious Omicron subvariant. Ho said on a radio program Monday that the recently reported cases are still classified as part of the city’s fifth wave, pointing out that cases would not be considered part of a sixth wave as long as they are not new variants.

The city last reported a four-digit daily caseload at 1,043 cases on April 14. Ho expects Covid-19 cases to hit the four-digit mark once again by the end of the month, but he believes that the public should not be overly concerned provided that sufficient vaccination rates are met.
