International passengers arriving in Hong Kong no longer have to face Covid movement controls or be barred from certain venues under the cancellation of the Amber Code. The travel industry welcomes the move, but stated that dropping PCR tests and Vaccine Pass would be what the tourism sector is waiting for.
Executive Director of the Travel Industry Council of Hong Kong, Fanny Yeung Shuk-fan, said the new measure would attract tourists coming to Hong Kong and make it easier for tour groups to arrange dining or attractions visit.
However, Yeung expects there won't be too many tour groups visiting Hong Kong during the Christmas holidays as there is only a short time for preparations.
Yeung instead believes that lifting the PCR tests and
Vaccine Pass mandate, in conjunction with quarantine-free arrangement with the mainland, would be what truly revives the tourism industry of Hong Kong.
Meanwhile, Cathay Pacific welcomes the government's decision to remove the Amber Code restrictions under the
Vaccine Pass for inbound persons.
The airline said the adjustments would help further boost sentiment for travel, especially among inbound visitors, thereby facilitating the resumption of travel activities and strengthening of network connectivity at the Hong Kong aviation hub.
Cathay added that the group is on track to achieve target of operating up to one-third of pre-pandemic passenger flight capacity levels by end of this year and aims to return to pre-pandemic levels by the end of 2024.
