Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor was among dozens of political heavyweights who attended the funeral of Heung Yee Kuk ex-chairman Benton Cheung Yan-lung as pallbearers at Hong Kong Funeral Home in North Point yesterday.
Cheung, called "King of the New Territories" for his competency in handling district-related affairs, had Parkinson's disease and dementia in later life.
He passed away at the age of 103 on September 21.
Also attending his funeral were Financial Secretary Paul Chan Mo-po, Secretary for Justice Teresa Cheng Yeuk-wah, Secretary for the Civil Service Patrick Nip Tak-kuen and the Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury, Christopher Hui Ching-yu.
Others were Hong Kong's sole delegate to the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, Tam Yiu-chung, Legislative Council president Andrew Leung Kwan-yuen, Executive Council convener Bernard Charnwut Chan and Basic Law Committee vice-chairwoman Maria Tam Wai-chu.
The Kuk chairman, Kenneth Lau Ip-keung, and Cheung's family members paid tribute to Cheung.
Wreaths from Cheung's two wives - Liu Fung-wo and Hui Yuk-kau - and his children as well as grandchildren were placed in front of his portrait.
After the funeral, Cheung's body was sent to Cape Collinson Crematorium at Tai Tam Gap.
On Sunday a night vigil was held by Cheung's family in the same hall.
Among those who attended the vigil were acting chief executive John Lee Ka-chiu, Secretary for Food and Health Sophia Chan Siu-chee, former chief executive Leung Chun-ying and his wife and former chief executive Tsang Yam-kuen.
Cheung was the Kuk chairman from 1964 to 1966, and was elected as the Kuk vice-chairman from 1974 to 1978.
From 1981 to 1994, he was also a Legco member and North District councillor. Ahead of the handover in 1997, he was a lawmaker and chairman of the now-defunct regional council.
Lung Sum Avenue in Sheung Shui is named after him and another elder, Liu Yun-sum, for their contributions to the area.
