Beijing slams Nancy Pelosi for criticising arrest of Hong Kong cardinal
Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian tells US House speaker to focus on issues in United States, rather than ‘let Hong Kong bother her’.
Beijing has told US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to “mind her own business” and not waste energy on Hong Kong’s affairs after the American politician condemned local authorities for the recent arrest of Cardinal Joseph Zen Ze-kiun and four other opposition activists.
The rebuttal by Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian on Monday came hours after the Communist Party’s Qiushi publication issued a 7,600-word essay lauding Beijing’s efforts to strengthen national security through various initiatives, including new legislation in Hong Kong.
