Beijing has approved the resignation of Chief Secretary John Lee Ka-chiu, according to a government announcement.
The news on Friday came two days after Lee tendered his resignation and said he will join the Chief Executive race following Beijing’s approval.
In accordance with the relevant provisions of the Basic Law and the recommendation of Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor, the State Council has decided to remove Lee from the office of chief secretary, the government statement wrote.
Sources told Lee was expected to announce his currently unopposed candidacy for the city’s top job.
It was understood that he was the only person backed by Beijing, meaning Hong Kong will be left with only one CE candidate for the first time since the 1997 handover.
